Bike Bottom Brackets

(19)

Housed in the bottom bracket shell within your bike frame, bike bottom brackets are usually hidden from view and work no matter the weather or terrain. Connected to your chainset, they help the cranks turn smoothly while you ride. The type of bicycle bottom brackets you need will depend on a few varying factors such as the type of frame and its age. At Dolan, we offer a range of brackets to suit your needs.

Replacing your bike bottom brackets

There are two different types of bike bottom brackets: those that are pressed into your frame and those that need to be threaded into it. The latter comes in different versions, with the more modern offerings providing long-lasting durability. Press-fit bottom brackets don’t require a threaded shell but still have to adhere to strict standards.

If you’re not sure about the type of bracket you need, measure the inside of the bottom bracket shell within your bike frame. If you need assistance with this, please contact us and we’ll help further. Our range of bike bottom brackets also includes ceramic ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Steel bottom brackets vs ceramic bottom brackets - what is the difference?

Although steel is more common when it comes to bottom brackets, newer models made of strong ceramic offer better durability. That being said, they vastly reduce friction.

How do I find the right bottom bracket for my bike?

All brackets come in sizes 73mm, 70mm or 68mm. To find out which size suits your bike, you’ll need to measure the inside of your bottom bracket shell.

What does the bottom bracket on a bike do?

Essentially, it’s a component that connects the crankset to the frame. This is what allows the crankset to rotate independently.

How do I know if my bottom bracket needs replacing?

You can usually tell if your bottom bracket needs replacing if there’s a wobble when you drop the chain off its chainring and spin the cranks.

How often do you need to replace a bottom bracket?

Each bottom bracket can last for thousands of miles. When converted to time, this can vary from rider to rider. For more experienced riders, this tends to be every 1-2 years.

How do I stop my bottom bracket from creaking?

You can do this by cleaning the threads and re-greasing them regularly.
